Basement Remodel

What was once a glorified crawl space with a dirt floor is now an in-law apartment, with its own entrance, kitchen, bath and laundry. It is currently used as a game room and place to watch movies.

A close up of the "pit" -- when lined with cushions and pillows it's the coziest place in the house. The column to the right of the stove is a structural reinforced concrete element, with a thick steel plate -- now covered with the walnut mantle -- extending out and supporting the weight of 30 feet of chimney above. The original grade level was just above the mantel. The mosaic tile covering the column has an iridenscent finish that changes colors as you move around it, with a design motif that represents the elements of earth, fire, water and air.
